About us

Here you can find out about the history and the people behind Chuenis

1956:The newly appointed Adelboden course director and former ski racer, Dr. Fred Rubi, invites his former competitors to the first International Adelboden Ski Days. 36 racers in sweaters, wool caps and wedge pants compete in the first race under this title in front of 2,000 spectators.

1959: Both slaloms have to be moved to Tschentenalp for the first time due to insufficient snow at Chuenisbärgli . This was to be the case ten more times until FIS decided in 1994 that the finish area at Tschenten was no longer fit for purpose and therefore no more races could be held there.

1967: The Slalom races are held as FIS World Cup races for the first time, laying the foundation for today's Giant Slalom classic.

1968: Saturday's race is cancelled due to a snowstorm. The riders take it in their stride as they have a snowball fight and help the 160 officials get the slope ready for Sunday's race.

1982: Swiss television broadcasts the races live for the first time.

1989: The history of the International Adelboden Ski Days seems to come to an end. The FIS wants to reduce the seven Swiss races to five and therefore remove Adelboden from the calendar. After strong protests, the decision is reversed.

1991: The 25th FIS World Cup race takes place. The budget is CHF 160,000 and, according to Fred Rubi, it is the cheapest event on the ski circuit.

1992: Hans Pieren from Adelboden, who later became race director at Chuenis, manages to make it onto the podium on his local mountain. He finishes second in the Giant Slalom at Chuenis. He is the second best Giant Slalom skier in the entire World Cup during this season. Only Alberto Tomba is more successful.

1995: A new, four-member OC takes over the organisation of the races after Fred Rubi steps down. A new concept with grandstand, VIP tent and World Cup Village focuses increasingly on the sport as an entertainment experience.

1999: A new snowmaking system makes it possible to set up snow depots at an early stage when temperatures are low and to cover the piste with snow from start to finish. The budget for the event exceeds CHF 1 million for the first time.

2002: The start of the Giant Slalom is moved to the top station of the former ski lift, extending the Chuenisbärgli run by including the fearsome "cannon barrel". Injection bars are also used for the first time to make the slope harder and more compact.

2005: The FIS demands a new chair lift to replace the old T-bar lift, otherwise there would be no more races at Chuenisbärgli. Locals and visitors help to raise the rest of the money needed for the new construction.

2006: The race weekend now includes a Giant Slalom on Saturday and a Slalom on Sunday. The Giant Slalom is considered one of the most difficult in the World Cup circuit and the Slalom stands out for the steepest finish slope.

2021: Due to the Covid pandemic, the ski races in Adelboden take place without ski fans and under strict protective measures.

2023: For the first time in history, the Giant Slalom at Chuenis is sold out, meaning even the pre-sale has to be stopped. The event generates an annual added value of over CHF 10 million for the region.

2025: Marco Odermatt made history on the Chuenisbärgli : the man from Nidwalden celebrated his fourth consecutive Giant Slalom in 2025, drawing level with skiing legend Ingemar Stenmark. Due to capricious weather conditions, the disciplines were swapped - slalom on Saturday, Giant Slalom on Sunday. The Chuenisbärgli was completely sold out on both days.

"Chuenis is doing its part"

Every January, it's that time of year again: Adelboden is transformed into a cauldron when the world's best ski racers compete on the Chuenisbärgli . The Chuenisbärgli is one of the classics in the Ski World Cup. A place where dramas have been written and legends have been crowned. It is home to the most difficult giant slalom slope. So they say. In order to be able to write many more stories and memories on the Chuenisbärgli , it is important to us to take care of the environment and the climate and to assume social responsibility. The Ski World Cup Adelboden has set itself the goal of organizing the event as climate-friendly as possible.

Implementing our sustainability efforts is a challenge not only for us as organisers, but also for visitors, sponsors, partners and helpers to make their contribution. In the spirit of "We're in, are you?"

How to get here

ARRIVE EARLY

We appeal to all ski fans to arrive early on both race days and to allow enough time for the journey. It is better to linger in the Chuenis village with coffee and croissants and enjoy the atmosphere instead of missing the first run.
